Cbc.ca: U.S. group wants religion pulled from... →
Coming up: Anti-religion, the new dumb religion. More at 10.
blownspeakers:
A group of atheists is taking legal action in hopes of having all religious references removed from U.S. president-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony in January. A lawsuit filed in Federal Court is trying to prevent having the phrase “So help me God” included in the oath of office. It also wants to prevent...
So, I didn’t know who Santogold was until about a week ago. I really like the album, but I can’t get over how much “L.E.S. Artistes” sounds like Walking With A Ghost by Tegan & Sara. Am I the only one that can’t get over this?

Gus Van Sant meets David Foster Wallace, 1998 →
This is long (it probably took me a whole 9 minutes— I know, I know, that’s the internet equivalent of sitting through the entire LOTR trilogy), but it’s worth it. They both seem like such rad dudes.
I really need to see more of Van Sant’s films, and stop remembering him as the creator of “Last Days”.

The whole blog is actually pretty great. I thought it would be bitter ranty stuff, but it’s quite funny.
jakemadison:
If that typo was actually supposed to read “spelling eros”, then this post is awesome.
Second thoughts: nope, still not awesome.
Also: turns out people dislike it when others make fun of them for something they’re not very good at.

Seriously, stop it! It’s annoying. Stop talking about fixing typos or mentioning spelling erros and ending that rude, horribly insecure comment with:
“It’s the English major in me!” or
“It’s just one of my pet peeves!” or
“It’s no big deal. It’s just one of those things that I notice!”
Here’s the thing: it’s not just one of those things that you notice. It’s one of those things...

RIAA To Stop Suing Music Swappers →
The move ends a controversial program that saw the Recording Industry Association of America sue about 35,000 people since 2003 for swapping songs online. Because of high legal costs for defenders, virtually all of those hit with lawsuits settled, on average for around $3,500. The association’s legal costs, in the meantime, exceeded the settlement money it brought in.

When you’re as close as you’ll ever get to being above the law, why wouldn’t you take advantage?
MillerCoors to stop selling Sparks →
Am I the only one that thinks sparks is a waste of time? I’m all for getting ripped drunk and jacked up on caffeine and taurine, I love it. It’s rad. But sparks tastes so god awful that I’ve never been able to get more than 1 down, and it’s not me hating on malt liquor. I love me a Colt 45 or an OE, no problem, but Sparks makes OE taste like Innis & Gunn.
Good...
The 100 Best Tracks of 2008 | Pitchfork →
That’s one of the best parts of pitchfork, is that they’ll give equal ears to music that sounds like Justin Timberlake and Beyonce that they give to things like Vampire Weekend, MGMT, and Deerhunter while just finishing listening to Four Tet and The Juan Maclean and then toss on The Bug and Burial before they go home.
And maybe they did that specific thing on purpose, just to piss off...
Zakkushi →
I’ve never been to this one, but I’m going to try it out now. My favourite so far is King-Yo on Denman. Guu on Robson is my staple when the pockets aren’t as deep.

This is my favourite izakaya! I could survive on their yakitori alone.
Well, maybe their yakitori and cheese.

A new izakaya opened up in my neighbourhood. Soooooo gooooood.
Kidnapping Negotiator Is Now a Victim in Mexico
“The consultant, Felix Batista, 55, was giving security seminars for business owners in Coahuila State when he was abducted by a group of armed men.”
I’m sure if he just called his little brother Angel, in Miami, he’d have the whole team on it, or even Dexter Morgan himself.

That’s because it’s true. They did a survey and those were the numbers.

I believe it.
blownspeakers:
A new survey for the Dominion Institute, taken in the aftermath of this month’s political crisis in which the word “prorogue” was pulled from dusty old political science textbooks, suggests a woeful ignorance when it comes to our system of government. For example,...

The population will never come to an agreement on if it’s right or wrong. The show is about exposing how things currently work, they’re making the process transparent.

I really don’t understand how having more or less information about an act makes that act more or less moral/immoral or in any way “justified”. The fact that there’s some moral intuition that you have...

Spin's Top Ten Records of 2008 →
Weird. I’m not going to check, but I believe this is almost exactly the same as Time Magazine’s top 10 albums of the year.

Wow, Spin’s top 10 list is really really bad. Seriously, a professional music fan wrote this?
